Abigail Taylor was the daughter of John and Mary (Whitehead) Taylor of Long Island. She was the first wife of the Rev. Benjamin Woolsey of Southold and Dosoris, Long Island. This miniature, based on a portrait in oil by an unidentified artist, was probably painted about 1795, soon after William Dunlap married Elizabeth Woolsey (1768-1848), granddaughter of the subject. The miniature was a gift to the Society from the subject's great-great-great-grandson.
