Lavinia Dorothy Simons, an amateur still-life and portrait painter, was born in Charleston, South Carolina, the daughter of Robert and Mary (Horlbeck) Simons. In 1820 she met and married Charles Cushing Wright, who was then working in Charleston as an engraver; in 1823 the couple moved to New York where they lived the rest of their lives. Mrs. Wright became a teacher, and was an early advocate of women's rights. Her portrait was a gift to the Society from her great-grandson.
