Harriet Livingston was the daughter of Walter and Cornelia (Schuyler) Livingston of Teviotdale, Livingston Manor; she was the niece of Chancellor Robert Livingston, who had become interested in Robert Fulton's steamboat design in Paris. She married Fulton in 1808. After his death, in 1815, she married Charles A. Dale. Fulton portrayed his wife wearing an Empire gown and sitting in an Empire-style chair, which support a date of 1810-15.
