Four-stranded coral bead child's necklace with rectangular metal clasp fastener, clasp has "MLW" engraved across center.

This necklace belonged to Maria Lott Wyckoff (1836-1840). Since ancient Roman times, coral has been believed to have the power to ward off enchantments, witchcraft and evil spirits. Coral jewelry has long been associated with babies, and was often given as a christening gift to keep the baby safe and healthy.
