The subject, a native of Canada, became governor of Louisiana in 1743 and governor of Canada in 1755. This miniature portrait of him is a copy of a half-length portrait by an unidentified 18th-century French artist. The original was at one time in the collection of the Comtesse de Clermont-Tonnerre. It is reproduced in Fortier, "A History of Louisiana," I, 1904, opp. p. 136.
