Gallery Label
Adams' view is based on Thomas Cole's famous painting of Niagara Falls, now held by the Art Institute of Chicago. In the spring of 1829, Cole journeyed along the Erie Canal to reach Niagara Falls. He made 23 sketches of the spectacular site and completed his painting of the Falls in London later that year. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy to rave reviews.
