Single fold Gentleman's purse (pocketbook) in multicolored worsted woolen flame stitch needlepoint in a Bargello carntion design (also called "Irish work") on a linen canvas ground; completely handstitched; ferreted (18th Century term for edging a textile with a fabric tape) with green woolen tape and lined with a glazed green linen interior consisting of two compartments with gusseted sides on each side of fold.

The pocketbook belonged to Major General Israel Putnam (1718-1790), of Brooklyn, CT. It was presented to the Society on April 19, 1869, in the name of Mrs. Batchelder, who was married to John Putnam Batchelder, M.D., New York City. These purses were homemade and usually used by gentlemen for carrying currency and documents.
