Jean Guillaume Hyde de Neuville became one of the central figures in the intrigues and affairs of France in the early years of the 19th century. When he came to the United States in 1806, his home in New Brunswick, New Jersey, became a gathering place for French exiles. He returned to France in 1815 and a year later was appointed minister and consul general to the United States. In 1821 Louis XVIII made him a baron and he returned to France.
