A Presbyterian minister, Thomas was a pastor in New York City from 1911 to 1918 and entered politics in the 1920s. He was the socialist candidate for governor of New York in 1924 and ran twice for the office of mayor of New York City. He sought the presidency in 1928, 1932, 1936, 1940, 1944, and 1948.
