Prince Neuwied's studies and observations of the flora and fauna, Indian and frontier life, and the geography of the Mississippi Valley and the western territories were published in "Travels in the Interior of North America" (translated from the German and first published in London, 1843). This portrait was done in New Harmony, Indiana, where Prince Neuwied spent the winter of 1832-33.
