A native of Auburn, New York, the subject was ordained in 1883 and appointed acting chaplain of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1896. He was later a canon of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine (1900-1906) in New York. He was also chaplain of the Society of the Cincinnati and other patriotic organizations, a member of the Veteran Corps of Artillery, and at one time mayor of Boynton, Florida, where he maintained a winter home.
