The subject of this portrait was a protégé of Dr. Robert Smith, bishop of South Carolina, who ordained him deacon. Callaghan (or Callahan) preached occasionally at St. Mark's in the Bowery, and was offered the rectorship of the newly established parish in February 1800. He accepted and returned to South Carolina to be ordained to the priesthood. He was killed there in a carriage accident that April.
