Gilder, a native of Bordentown, N.J., made his mark in the field of journalism. He became editor of the publication "Hours at Home," and when it merged with "Scribner's Monthly" in 1870 he remained as assistant and then managing editor. "Scribner's" eventually became "The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine," one of the leading periodicals of the last quarter of the 19th century, and Gilder was its editor in chief.
