The subject, the son of James and Elizabeth (Sproat) Lenox, was born in Kirkcudbright, Scotland, and came to America just prior to the Revolution. A prosperous merchant, he served as president of the New York Chamber of Commerce from 1826 to 1839. Trumbull made this copy of an earlier portrait of his when Lenox was the height of his career; the original is in the Lenox Collection of the New York Public Library.
