A native of Victor, N.Y., the subject graduated from Cornell University and from 1914 to 1920 was assistant in the reference dept. of the New York Public Library. Thereafter he was librarian at several state and local historical societies. In 1944 he became director of The New-York Historical Society, a position he held until his retirement in 1960. In this portrait, he is shown seated at his desk in his office at the Society.
