Sam Rayburn studied law and established his practice in Bonham, Texas, in 1908. Five years later he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives where he served until his death, a total of forty-eight years. One of the powers of the Democratic party, he was elected Speaker of the House in 1940 and except for two brief periods held that position for the next twenty-one years.
