Sarah Ann Lake was the daughter of Phineas Lake (d. 1853) and Martha (Tuttle) Lake (d. 1824). She was the younger sister of Utley Spencer's first wife, Laura Lake. In 1845, the year after this sister's death, Sarah Ann Lake was married to Spencer. Her portrait was a gift to the Society from her grandniece.
