Elongated octagonal brass snuffbox with silhouetted and engraved scenes depicting the story of the prodigal son surrounding central panel with inscription on top and bottom; engraved scrollwork and diapering on sides; engraving on inside of lid with inscription enclosed in a heart surmounted by a crown at center and a winged nude female figure and a tree on either side; cylinder of sheet metal applied to inside of lid to serve as holder for snuff stick.
Gallery Label: 
This object was once part of the folk art collection of Elie Nadelman (1882-1946), the avant-garde sculptor. From 1924 to 1934, Nadelman's collection was displayed in his Museum of Folk Arts, located in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. The Historical Society purchased Nadelman's entire collection in 1937.
