Samuel Verplanck Hoffman, the donor of the sketch, probably purchased it at the sale of the Edward Babcock Holden collection, the American Art Galleries, New York City, on April 10, 1910. Item no. 1989 was described as a "very beautiful was drawing" of St. Mark's Church by August Will. Hoffman donated the items at the time of purchase.
