Candace Lee Williams, a 20-year-old Dean's List student at Northeastern University, died on September 11, 2001, when the highjackers of American Airlines Flight 11 crashed the jet into the World Trade Center. She had just returned to Northeastern after a semester as an intern in one of the twin towers for Merrill Lynch's Equity Trading Support Group. Candace's grandparents, Charles and Janice Williams, contacted the New-York Historical Society after reading about the History Responds collecting initiative and asked the Society to preserve some of her personal possessions as a memorial to Candace, including this blue and white tassel from her 1999 high school mortar board. Their gift alos included one of the many dolls Candace had enjoyed collecting ever since she was a child--a blonde, blue-eyed porcelain Alice in Wonderland doll that bears a striking resemblance to Candace as a girl (2003.39.1). Her grandparents' gift also included the program printed for Candace's memorial service (2003.39.3), copies of correspondence from Northeastern about her posthumous place on the Dean's List and the foundation of a Candace Williams Scholarship Fund, and photographs of Candace.
