2 3/4 x 3 1/2 in. diameter
A miniature shaving mug with a detailed color lithograph of a railroad track ascending steeply toward a mountain lodge with the caption "Otis Elev. R.R./ Catskill, N.Y." Otis Elevated Rail Road operated in the Catskill Mountains beginning in 1892. It was popular for travelers seeking to spend time at the Catskill Mountain House and other resorts. The train trip was also considered recreational or entertaining and attracted upper middle class day-trippers prior to the development of the inexpensive automobile. The image on this mug originated from a hand-colored 1892 postcard photograph of railroad workers on the Otis Elevated Rail Road, provided courtesy of the Ulster and Delaware Rail Road Historical Society, see additional images available by clicking on main image and choosing 'View All'.
