Lambdin, one of the leading portrait painters in Philadelphia from 1840 to 1870, painted the portraits of Generals Burnside, Rosecrans, Buell, Meade, and Reynolds during the years of the Civil War; in 1868, the year Grant was elected president, he painted this portrait from life.
