Gilt copper struck medal with obverse showing central allegorical female figure of Liberty rising from the ground, with sword in her right hand and left hand pointing toward thirteen stars in glory, date in exergue: "1776"; legend within beaded border: "THESE UNITED COLONIES ARE AND OF RIGHT OUGHT TO BE FREE AND INDEPENDENT STATES." Reverse bears inscription at center within laurel wreath: "IN/COMMEMORATION/OF THE/HUNDREDTH/ANNIVERSARY/OF/AMERICAN/INDEPENDENCE"; legend around border: "BY AUTHORITY OF THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES/1876."
