Reverse depicts rising Liberty with sword in right hand and left hand pointing toward thirteen stars in glory above; date in exergue: "1776"; legend within beaded border: "THESE UNITED COLONIES ARE AND OF RIGHT OUGHT TO BE FREE AND INDEPENDENT STATES." Medal inset into black leather square fitted case with purple silk velvet interior.
