Gilt copper struck medal with obverse depicting female allegorical figure of Liberty holding sword in her right hand, above are thirteen stars in glory; date in exergue, at center: "1876"; surrounding legend: "THESE UNITED COLONIES ARE, AND OF RIGHT OUGHT TO BE, FREE AND INDEPENDENT STATES." Reverse bears inscription within central roundel, surrounded by laurel wreath: "IN/COMMEMORATION/OF THE/HUNDREDTH/ANNIVERSARY/OF/AMERICAN/INDEPENDENCE"; legend: "BY AUTHORITY OF THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES"; date in exergue: "1876."
