On October 15, 1969, demonstrators organized a peace moratorium to counter the Vietnam War. An estimated 20 to 30 million people were involved in the activities in towns and cities throughout the U.S. Supporters of the Vietnam Moratorium wore black armbands to signify their dissent and paid tribute to American personnel killed in the war since 1961.
