According to Stuart M. Frank, curator of the New Bedford Whaling Museum, images found in magazines like Harper’s and Godey’ Lady Book often provided whalemen with subject matter for carving. In many cases physical evidence found on extent teeth suggests that the craver traced the image directly onto the tooth with either incised marks or a stipple technique. Further research might discover the source for the image of the hound and it’s prey.
Due to ongoing research, information about this object is subject to change.
