The subject was the son of Henry and Eliza (Daubeny) Waddell. The Coventry name is traced back in his mother's family to English peerage. He joined the administration of President Andrew Jackson as "financial agent" in the State Dept., and in 1832 was appointed U.S. marshal in New York.
