Prescott was born in Salem, Mass., and graduated from Harvard in 1814. A specialist in Spanish history, he wrote several influential books that earned him literary and scholarly acclaim. Among them were the "History of the Reign of Ferdinand and Isabella the Catholic" (3 vols., 1838), the "History of the Conquest of Mexico" (1843), and the "History of the Conquest of Peru" (1847).
