This miniature was identified as the artist's self-portrait when it was auctioned at Parke-Bernet Galleries in 1950. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, however, has in its collection a miniature acquired as a self-portrait and signed "Doyle 1801," in which the subject looks very different.
