The subject was the son of Wynant and Catharine (Ten Eyck) Van Zandt. He was born in New York and in 1760 married Jane Colgan, daughter of the Rev. Thomas Colgan who was at one time assistant rector of Trinity Church. Van Zandt was elected an alderman from the Dock Ward in 1789. He lived with his family at 35 William Street in New York.
