Bronzes for the Gilded Age: Mythology and the Ideal in American Sculpture

April 21, 2006 - July 30, 2006

Bronzes for the Gilded Age explores the flowering of American bronze sculpture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, emphasizing works created after mythological or ideal themes. From an ennobling rendering of a Native American hunter to the provocative nude of the goddess Diana, these works reveal the inventive spirit of American sculpture as artists abandoned traditional neoclassicism in favor of the more expressive French Beaux Arts style. Artists represented in the exhibition include the many leading sculptors of the era, such as Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Frederick MacMonnies and John Quincy Adams Ward.
