Jewett exhibited a "Portrait of a Young Gentleman" in 1819 at the American Academy of Fine Arts, which was very likely this portrait of Durand. By 1819 Durand had long been a frequent visitor to the studio of Samuel Waldo, where William Jewett had begun serving an apprenticeship in 1812. Most likely this portrait was executed during visits Durand paid to the studio of Waldo and Jewett at this time.
