Bronze struck medal with obverse showing head of Augustus Hofmann facing left with surrounding legend: "AUGUSTUS WILLIAM HOFMANN." Reverse is inscribed: "TO/A.W. HOFMANN/FROM/HIS FRIENDS/AND ADMIRERS/IN THE/UNITED STATES/OF AMERICA/OCTOBER 1883."

Augustus Wilhelm von Hofmann (1818-1892) was a German chemist of international fame most well known for proposing the standard system of hydrocarbon nomenclature (1886). A respected teacher, he was at one time Director of the Royal College of Chemistry in London.
