Berlin-work bell pull of rose and pansy pattern of silk and wool stitching on burlap ground, ground covered in tan wool; pink rose and rose bud vining pattern with blue pansies with yellow centers and brown and green leaves and vine stem; sides and bottom edge finished, top edge is unfinished raw edge which retains part of its continued repeat pattern of rose bud leaf, though has been cut.
Bell pulls were both a functional item and a status symbol, since they not only allowed a family to call their servant, but told visitors quite plainly that there were servants to call. Bell pulls, often rendered by girls and women in Berlin wool work, were common in the middle of the nineteenth century.
