Description
Nearly square linen marking sampler in various colors of silk thread; horizontal rows of four different alphabets different stitches and styles of cross, queen's or eyelet stitch in capital lettering, cursive in capital and small block lettering; numbers in upper two-thirds section; verse titled "Human Fraility" and inscription in bottom third, "Catherine Ann Remsen"; bordered by a deeply arcaded rosebud meandering border motif and straight line border worked in cross-stitch close to edge; cross, eyelet and satin stitches.

This sampler was worked by Catherine Ann Remsen (Mrs. Frederick Schuchardt, 1812-1877) at a New York CIty girls' school. Her verse is a pastoral poem by the Greek poet Theocritus, translated into English by John Dryden in the seventeenth century.
