Embroidered silk bedcover with pair of Chinese dragons encircled at center, surrounded by scattered branches with blossoms and enclosed in rectangular frame with a peacock at each corner; wide meandering vine border with ikebana motif in each corner; silk backing with metal rings sewn along one edge (not original).
Bequest of Miss Catherine Augusta de Peyster, 1911
The original owner of this bedcover was Mrs. John Livingston (Catharine DePeyster, 1724-1804), great-grandmother of the donor. Safford and Bishop note that embroidered silk bedcovers of this type were imported for use in the wealthiest American homes of the period (see "America's Quilts and Coverlets," p. 62).
