The subject, a New York merchant, was the son of Barent Rynders. Sr. (d. 1682), an immigrant from Holland, and his wife Elizabeth Van Cortlandt. He married Hester Leisler, daughter of Jacob Leisler, in 1696. This portrait, by an unidentified artist, is similar in style to portraits by Evert Duyckinck, III (ca. 1677-1727).
