Description
This portrait was probably painted when Audubon passed through New Orleans on his trip to Texas (1845-46), when he was thirty-three years old. The Byronic collar of Audubon's shirt was still in vogue at that time.

The younger son of the orinthologist assisted father in making the illustrations of the birds and animals of America for his publications. In 1837 he married Maria Rebecca. Audubon travelled a great deal with or for his father to Labrador, Texas, and England. Beginning in 1840 he frequently exhibited landscapes, portraits, and bird or animal paintings at the National Academy of Design, of which he was an associate member from 1848 until his death.
