Maria Louisa Shepard was the eldest daughter of Colonel Elliott Fitch Shepard and Margaret Louisa (Vanderbilt) Shepard. She married William Jay Schieffelin, a great-great-grandson of Chief Justice John Jay and of Jacob Schieffelin, on February 5, 1891.
