Gen. Winfield Scott (1786-1866), pictured on this ribbon, fought in the War of 1812, the Indian Wars and the mexican War. During the War of 1812, U.S. troops attempted to engage the British on the U.S./Canadian border. In the Battle of Lundy's Lane (near Niagara Falls) Scott's troops were defeated by the British. His campaigns in the Mexican War were more successful. In the most decisive campaign of that war, he led 14,000 men from Veracruz to Mexico City and captured the capital.
