The Wright brothers' first proposal to solve the problem of mechanical flight was made to the Aero Club of America, founded in 1905. The Club was the first group in the U.S. to set standards for, and issue, pilot's licenses. In 1922 it incorporated with other flying clubs to form the National Aeronautic Association. This medal was owned by Gerardus Post Herrick (1873-1955).
