Sybil Katherine Sherman was the daughter of W. Watts Sherman (d. 1912) and Annie Derby Rogers Wetmore, daughter of William Shepard Wetmore and niece of Governor George Peabody Wetmore of Rhode Island. She was the first of three wives of John Ellis Hoffman; they were divorced in 1904 and a year later the subject was married to Norrie Sellar (d. 1932), a prominent London and New York cotton broker.
