Description
Chippendale cherry chest of drawers; slightly projecting top molded on the front and sides; case has four graduated, lipped drawers; brass escutcheons with bail handles (not original) and escutcheons over keyholes; applied base molding on the front and sides; ogee bracket feet.

Gallery Label
According to the accession records, this chest of drawers belonged to the Hawley Family, who were ancestors of the donor. Charles Hawley (1792-1866) was Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut from 1838 to 1842. The maker, George Whitfield Peck, signed his name on the back of the lowest drawer. Peck is listed as a house and ship carpenter in the New York City directories between 1787 and 1800.
