According to the accession records, this chair belonged to a set used in the Board room of the Society's Second Avenue Building. Before coming to N-YHS, the chairs were apparently part of the furnishings of Federal Hall in New York City. The donor's husband received the chairs from his sister-in-law, a granddaughter of Israel Putnam (1718-1790). As major-general in the Continental Army, Putnam played an important part in the battle of Bunker Hill.
