Looking north from Battery Park, this view of downtown Manhattan features, in the distance, the towering canyon of Broadway where it begins its long northern path. To the right stands the United States Customs House while the elevated railway between South Ferry and Battery Place traverses the foreground. Thain, who came to New York in 1919, drew much inspiration from the city's soaring architecture and unbridled modernity, resulting in an extensive series of cityscapes.
