Description
Tin-glazed earthenware oval molded dish with wide rim; white tin glaze decorated in blue with an unclothed woman representing fecundity seated among columns, draperies, leaded windows, and five small children. Flower baskets and masks on the rim and floral sprays and birds in wells. Date (1703) and initials(W over W G) painted in window.

The design of this dish is copied from lead-glazed wares made by the sixteenth-century French potter Bernard Palissy. English examples were probably cast from a mold made from the earlier French models. This example dates later than any of the seventeen known dated examples of the fecundity motif, which all fall within the dates 1633 to 1697. A similar example, from the collection of Bertram K. and Nina Fletcher Little, sold at Sotheby's, October 21-22, 1994.
