Description
Colorless pressed lead glass cup plate; circular form with edge consisting of larger scallop alternating with four smaller scallops; in well, portrait bust (profile) of Major Samuel Ringgold in military dress, with name and place of death to each side of profile; plain interior rim (Lee-Rose 585-A).

Gallery Label
Major Samuel Ringgold was the first American officer to be fatally wounded in the Mexican War, in 1846. Ringgold was born in 1800 in Washington County, Maryland, and entered West Point at the age of 14. After several prestigious appointments, Ringgold was assigned to organize a corps of flying artillery. He died in the course of its first trial at Palo Alto on May 8, 1846, and was buried at Port Isabel. (See Publications)
