Description
Opaque white non-lead glass mug; barrel-shaped mug with applied handle crimped at end with gold band at rim and polychrome picture of eagle with "Liberty" in script above and one gold star below, all within foliate wreath surrounded by 14 gold stars; slightly domed base with pontil mark.

Opaque white glass, known in the period as "glass china" was an imitation of Chinese porcelain made throughout Europe. Mugs with eagles and "Liberty" were made in Italy in the 19th cent. for the American market.
According to the accession records, this mug was made in Bristol, England, to commemorate the admittance of Vermont into the Union, May 4, 1791. A curatorial card dated 4/1/61 notes that a Mrs. Wm. Wright owns a similar mug with 15 stars that marked the admission of Kentucky in 1793.
