Description
Ovoid wooden bandbox and lid covered with paper printed with scene of balloon rising above panorama of houses, brick wall, and trees, in green, brown, and pink on yellow ground, inscribed around sides of bandbox: "CLAYTON..S ASCENT"; lid covered with paper printed with scene divided into two sections, first with man thrusting spear towards serpent, surrounded by wavy sea, second of two houses and brick wall, in green, brown, and pink on yellow ground; edge of lid covered in paper printed with segments of trees, figures, and houses in green, brown, and pink on yellow ground; lap joints secured with metal nails.

Gallery Label
This object was once part of the folk art collection of Elie Nadelman (1882-1946), the avant-garde sculptor. From 1924 to 1934, Nadelman's collection was displayed in his Museum of Folk Arts, located in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. The Historical Society purchased Nadelman's entire collection in 1937.
